Since completing the report I have seen a few more documents relating to text processors
some of which make important points, these are:

A short@cite(dublin) paper by Timothy Murphy of the School of Mathematics, Trinity College,
Dublin which compares T@-(E)X with NROFF/TROFF.
 
A long paper@cite(furutaetal) by  Furuta et al which discusses text processors
from a conceptual point of view as well as surveying several such processors.
In particular, it includes further information re NROFF/TROFF, including the
ability to handle line drawings and references by means of two further pre-processors,
PIC and REF respectively.
