The @3@@APPENDIX@1 command has the form:

@3@@APPENDIX'title'@1

where @3title@1 is the title of the appendix
concerned, eg:

@3@@APPENDIX'This is an appendix'@1

An @3@@APPENDIX@1 command produces a numbered,
boldface appendix heading, set off from the
surrounding text, and positioned at the left
margin. 

Note that Roman not Arabic numbers are used
for numbering appendixes.
